Hepatitis A Basics

Hepatitis A is a condition that affects the liver. It is caused by infection with the Hepatitis A virus. This particular strain of Hepatitis is found primarily in undeveloped countries where poor living conditions exist. In order for an individual to be infected with Hepatitis A they must ingest or put something in their mouth that has come in contact with the waste of someone who is infected.

Although a person can suffer with symptoms when they are infected with Hepatitis A that isn’t always the case, it largely depends on the individual. If there are symptoms present they can range from a fever and abdominal pains to jaundice. Children who are infected with Hepatitis A are less likely to have symptoms than older people.

If a person has been treated for Hepatitis A they cannot contract the disease again. They also can’t transmit the disease to another person once their treatment is complete.

There is a vaccine available for Hepatitis A and those who are at high risk should consider receiving the vaccination. It is advised that people who fall into the following categories have the vaccination:

* Vacationers traveling to overseas destinations where there is a high number of Hepatitis A cases. This is a good idea because the individuals traveling may come in contact with the virus while eating.

* Children who live in high risk areas. If there is a high occurrence of Hepatitis A every child under the age of 5 years should be vaccinated to protect them from contracting the disease.

* People who share needles. Many people who are addicted to illegal substances share needles. This is a common way for the Hepatitis A virus to be spread.

* Researchers who are studying Hepatitis A. These individuals are being exposed to the virus on a regular basis and therefore it’s wise for them to be vaccinated to protect themselves.

Although you may not consider yourself at risk of developing Hepatitis A there is certainly a chance that you can contract it. No individual is 100% safe. Once you understand the risk factors involved with Hepatitis A you can work to stay healthy and safe.
